How often should you change your furnace filter?
A furnace filter is the cheapest, least interesting and most consistently neglected piece of home maintenance there is. It also has an outsized effect on your heating bill, your air quality, and how long the furnace itself lasts.
The good news is that it takes two minutes. The problem is remembering.
The short answer, by filter thickness
The single biggest factor is how thick the filter is. A thicker filter has far more surface area, so it holds more dust before it chokes.

Your furnace or filter manufacturer's own guidance always wins over a general table. But if you have the standard 1-inch filter and you are changing it once a year, it has been doing very little for most of that year.
What makes you change it more often
Start from the interval above and shorten it if any of these apply:
- Pets that shed. One dog or cat can take a 1-inch filter from three months to two. Several will take it to one.
- Anyone with allergies or asthma. More frequent changes with a higher-rated filter make a genuine difference.
- Smokers in the house.
- Ongoing renovation or construction dust. During active work, check monthly regardless of the rating — drywall dust destroys filters.
- Running the system hard. A filter in a house that heats all winter and cools all summer sees roughly twice the air of one in a mild climate.
- A dusty or rural location, or a gravel road nearby.
Conversely: an empty apartment with no pets in a mild climate can genuinely go the full interval, sometimes longer.
How to tell it is overdue
Hold it up to a light. If you cannot see light through it, it is well past due — and it was probably due some time before that. Other signals:
- Visible grey matting across the surface rather than a clean pleat
- Weaker airflow from the vents
- The system running longer to reach the set temperature
- More dust settling on surfaces than usual
- A rising heating or cooling bill with no change in habits
Why it matters more than it looks
A clogged filter does not simply stop cleaning the air — it starves the system of airflow. The blower works harder for less result, which costs electricity. In heating, restricted airflow can cause the heat exchanger to run hotter than designed. In cooling, it can let the evaporator coil ice up, which stops the system cooling at all and can damage the compressor.
The filter is a few dollars. The furnace is thousands. That is the entire argument.
A note on filter ratings
Higher-rated filters catch smaller particles, but they also restrict airflow more. It is possible to fit a filter so restrictive that it harms a system not designed for it. Unless you know your equipment tolerates it, a mid-range filter changed on schedule beats a high-end filter left in for a year — by a wide margin.
Make it a recurring task, not a memory test
Nobody forgets to change the filter because they do not care. They forget because there is no trigger: it is invisible, it is silent, and nothing happens on the day it becomes overdue.
Set it as a repeating task with the right interval for your house, and mark it done when you do it so the countdown restarts from that day rather than from an arbitrary calendar date. Then buy filters two or three at a time — the second most common reason a filter does not get changed is not having a spare.
